Soil slips in Brazil, 27 people die
At least 27 people were killed by landslides in a mountainous region near the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Several days of torrential rains caused the sliding soil in the remote mountainous region Petropolis. Two rescue workers were among the dead. Thousands of people were forced to evacuate flooded areas and seek emergency shelter. Rains, floods and landslides left killed more than 900 people in the same region in 2011.
